Faisal & Sofea: Outdoor Portraiture

I am taking a break from wedding photos for a while right now since February & March is a very hectic months for wedding photographers throughout Malaysia. This is because these two months are filled with several public holidays as well as school break, so their respective family members and relatives can travel to make it to the ceremonies and have ample time to relax in the process.

As for myself, I am having quite a busy February & March taking pictures, attending weddings and designing albums, so before the storms hit the shore, I’d better take some cover and write an article about something else first.

This entry is about a recent photography workshop organized by team ShutterSpeak at Hotel Puri, Melaka. The main reason for me to attend such workshop is to polish my skill in composition and style, and also to learn more about photography in general and to get to know other participants among others. The workshop was held for 3 days including theory and practical work.

The first session on Friday night was about the team’s history, their recent works and also introduction session from each participant. We were briefed basically about design, composition and some camera technical stuff.

The second day was the practical training, which was divided into two sessions. The morning session was the street photography whereas the subject is the lovely couple of Sofea and Faisal (Alex Mahone Shisha). We were brought along the famous streets of Malacca for the photoshoot session from 9am till 12pm. Then we had a lunch break before we continue to the second session.

The second session started at around 2pm till 5pm within the gorgeous hotel compound of Hotel Puri. The hotel is one of the few boutique hotels in Malaysia where the landscape and architecture blends perfectly to compliment each other. Being in Malacca, the famous Baba & Nyonya cultural & historical values can be seen and feel around the hotel, as you can see in the pictures below.

The night session was about photo critique and we were told to select our top 10 shots from both sessions today. The photos here are my best 10 photos of the day that I managed to capture, and I really believe these shots were possible because Sofea & Faisal was a real handful in front of the camera. I can still remember most of the guys don’t say too much when photographing because they are just so natural in front of the camera and they seems to feel what the photographers wanted to show in each shot.

The third and the final day were about post- processing technique, software selection and basically how to design a custom album like they do. We then finished the session at around 1pm and the workshop is officially concluded.

The entire workshop’s programs were conducted by Zaidan, Suhaimi, Mhisyam and Ariff Bani of team ShutterSpeak who were great individuals to have known and the knowledge we shared throughout the workshop was one to cherish. For me personally, the workshop did give me what I wanted from a photography workshop and I can say that their objective has been met as well as mine’s.

I WILL try my best to be as informative as possible when writing an entry in this website besides posting images of wedding, studio, product or anything that is relevant to my profession. This includes information about technical side of photography, artistic value, creativity or simply a story about my own experience during any assignment. My aim is to share any positive knowledge I’ve gained along the way in my daily working life so we can benefit from each other in the future.

In this entry, I would like to share a collection of images taken in my own studio and some very basic editing I’ve experimented with these images. Basically I used 2 units of Digicolor 250V lighting and a white background for this setup and a few adjustment to the position of the lighting in each image. I also used 2 units of 60cm x 60cm soft box for the first 2 shots and a honeycomb for the last 2 shots. After the selection of these images, minor editing to the colors and softness/sharpness were done to give each image its own feel. I hope you guys also feel the mood in each images below, it’s up to you to decide. More images of this set can be seen here

I’ve also made a resolution to update this website as regular as possible, and to achieve such target is to have better time management and micro/macro management within myself, hehe. With this, I hope more people will visit this website and exchange information and knowledge so everybody can benefit from each other in a calm and healthy environment, insyaAllah.

The model for this session was a married couple, also a good friend of mine, Zaidi Omaq & Nazila Nor Said, taken in my studio few weeks ago. Please feel free to share your comment and criticism in the comment box below.

Have a nice day mate!

Photography is Relaxing?

What do we do on weekdays when we are not shooting?

Since 90% or so of the Malay wedding photographers in this country does this job as  part time to ‘earn some decent money’ or to ‘fill up their weekends with activities’, most of our people (especially friends and friends of friends) label photographers as mere hobbyist or amateur, not a well positioned profession or career worth trying. That also happens to me unfortunately.

Since I am doing photography as a professional (following an occupation as a means of livelihood or for gain; see www.dictionary.com) or in simple terms a full time job, I’ve came across so many people asking me this question, “What do you do on weekdays when you are not shooting? Relax?” So with this article I hope this question will be answered once and for all.

Many people have friends or relatives who are a lecturer by profession. But nobody would ask them what they do when they are not having tutor classes or exams. This doesn’t mean that they know what these lecturers are doing in their so- called ‘free time’, but for them it’s just not appropriate to ask them about it, or just pretend to understand what their job is really about. But when it comes to photography, people thinks that this is cool, relax job that what we only do is shooting and go home browsing through the pictures and deleting some blur images, and walla, our job is done! I don’t blame these people for thinking that way though, instead I think it is our obligation to educate and to inform the masses about this issue so we have more understanding in the future between the client and the photographers since wedding photography among Malays is new compared to other profession like Doctors, Architects and Engineers.

In my experience so far, which is not that long by the way, when I decided to make photography as a full time occupation, there are so many things that came into play here. We also have to put business sense into the equation as well. Because by doing photography full time, passion or art sense alone is not enough for you to survive, let alone growing with technology and keeping the pace up with the established entities. This is where our ‘free time’ is filled with activities and researches about the business world and how to improve to stay competitive and probably invent something new for the market. As a business entity in any field, the owner must always find ways to improve their business to be a step ahead from the competition. Some businesses spend millions of Dollars for R&D purpose just to make sure they are a step ahead from the competition in terms of technology or marketing. So, since full time photographers are also a business entity, we are not left behind in this race to compete in the market, and that’s basically what we do on weekdays or when we’re not shooting.

On a personal level, these are some of the things that I do while I’m not shooting any events. Please understand that this list is not final and revisable depending on situation or time:

  1. Editing images
  2. Design & print of albums, posters. Etc
  3. Writing & uploading pictures in blogs, websites, etc
  4. Liaising with printing shops on end products
  5. Time spent on traveling to the place of event
  6. Delivery of goods to clients
  7. Meeting with clients
  8. Research on new materials
  9. Research on knowledge (photography & business). This includes buying of books, magazines and surfing the internet.
  10. Practicing/ improving photography technique in the field
  11. Sales & Marketing

-         Magazine, newspaper, internet advertisement

-         Distribution of flyers

-         Renting exhibition booth

-         Meeting people in person

12. Revising preliminary artwork after meeting with client

Basically these are the activities we do on the days we are not photographing events, and please bare in mind that these activities does requires a huge amount of time to accomplish. Some of the item above requires days to complete, like editing & design of albums. These are the things that are not visible to the eyes of the clients but involve physical cost to it. It is also known as hidden cost. And in order to let the client understands about these hidden costs; it is our obligation to equip them with this kind of information so there will be more mutual respect between the client and the photographer.

I’ve read an article in a website not long ago that if a wedding photographer is covering an event of 8 hours for a client, he is actually spending 35 hours in total for that particular job alone. For the client, the photographer is physically ‘working’ for only 8 hours because that is where the client can see him, but technically he spend a whole lot more time behind the scene from start to finish for this particular client. And the list above is the extra hours that photographers spend, and that extra does cost money.

We are not yet talking into the details like wear & tear of photography equipment, or how many hours we spent meeting with clients just to close a deal for a job, but I believe with this article, more people will start to understand the essence of our profession and why some photographer charge this amount for their packages and some charge lower for the same item or higher from others. It is all in the details, and that is what we do on our weekdays. We don’t do other job for a living so our survival depends on our competitiveness..

Dan & Nani: inside the train

DID this job a few months back for Nik Hamidi. I can say that this assignment was one of the weirdest ceremony I’ve ever been to in general because of some very obvious reasons which I won’t write here. But one thing that was really weird but fun at the same time was that we did our outdoor session inside the LRT coach which is the first time for me. Fortunately there was no restriction from the staff and security (they even posed for the camera, that’s to show how nice our people are), so are free to shoot inside the train and the station compound until we are fully satisfied.

So here are some of the shots that I managed to captured that evening…

Announcement February 22nd 2010

Kuala Lumpur – Jakarta – Bogor (pt2)

Salam all, we meet again in this second part of my journey to Jakarta & Bogor to cover my old friend’s wedding. The first part was about their solemnization in Edna’s parents home in Central Jakarta, and today the reception ceremony is going to be held at the beautiful Kebun Bunga at Bogor, East Java.

I am not sure about this place either, but all I can say is that Bogor is situated in the middle of the Jakarta – Bandung old road, which is the road you use if you are not using the highway. Bogor is a very nice place with a lot of greenery compared to the bustling Jakarta or Bandung, and so does the location of the reception. The place is located at a cafe overlooking a big field full of flora and fauna, so it is technically a garden wedding.

Everybody knows traffic in the Java Island is massively congested, all the time. There are always people driving around looking for something no matter what time it is. Since Babb did bring quite a number of people from Penang as a ‘delegation’, we were split into 2 vehicle. I was with the bride and groom and ‘the young guns’, and the other party is the ‘old- timer’ or ‘the shopaholic‘ as Babb had suggested. He’s not lying for once about that when I found out later!! (Babb & co., you guys know the story right! haha)

So since we were split into two vehicle, it is completely normal to be separated in the middle of the road and got a little bit lost. But since everybody from Malaysia would hire a local supir for their journey here, it was somewhat surprising that the old-timer’s supir got lost in his own country! Getting lost or accidentally turned  into the wrong road in jakarta or Bogor will definitely cost you dearly, as what they had got into. As a result, the other vehicle arrived almost 2 hours late of schedule. Let me tell you something, being a passenger in Jakarta alone does give me headache, plus if the car is being driven by Babb, the headache is multiply by two, multiply by another two! Luckily I still have some fitness in me to successfully shoot their event. Damn, I wonder how the locals get on with the macet everyday!

As for the ceremony itself, it was wonderful, the setting, the food, the crowd (huuuuuu.. :D ) and I met a few local photographers as well. One thing I remember about them was that one of the photographer bought his Nikon D90 for 17 juta rupiah, and how much is that in Malaysia? You do the math. In true Indonesian tradition (I guess), most of the people were eating without the help of a table, and few of them were standing while having their meal. You don’t see that happening in our kampungs for sure.

In those 2 days I had wonderful time got to learn their culture, especially in wedding terms. I can say that their tradition and what we’ve been practicing here doesn’t differ too much, 98% is the same. The only 2% difference is maybe the language usage. I would like to thank Babb for inviting me to be your photographer for your greatest day, it has been an honor to be honest. To his big bro Afat, you are one damn good entertainer and a smooth talker, hahahaha, bro Imran (spending RM1000 for a flight to Jakarta) with his loud voice brightening things up and Muhammad(mat karung guni??) for being a good pengapit and a bit blur about a 100 000 rupiah and 10 000 rupiah difference. Luckily I learned a bit from my previous trip so he didn’t get conned by the pretty Jakarta ladies, huhuhuhuhuh..

And to the old-timers & ladies aka the shopaholic, you guys know how to shop very well indeed. I guess our brother Joe did mention something like pokai or RM2000 in total lost?? Only Afat knows the full story, hahaha. Anyway, if someone spent about RM2000 in Jakarta or Bandung alone, then he ’s considered filthy rich no matter how they spend the money or where they put the money into.

But hey, you don’t become a millionaire very often do you??

Seriously I would like to write more about this wonderful journey including the almost-there-but-not-quite trip to Tangkuban Perahu in Bandung where I had visualized how to shoot the couple few days back! Maybe next time Babb, huhu. Why we didn’t made it? Some technical issues probably. Spending a night at a villa on the high point of Puncak was some sort of magical to be honest. If we had the equipment or the energy to do a BBQ dinner that night, than it would define the word  ‘prefect’ perfectly! But I just want to make the story short, so now enjoy the pictures and have a nice day…

  • Local Celebrity Fitness staff

  • Indonesian relatives aka the big family

  • Garden wedding

  • Babb & Edna making way to the main area. Moments before this Babb asked Afat to make a sudden brake just to state his ‘intentions’. I almost knocked my head and camera at the front windscreen. musibait babb! haha

  • The lovely scenic boutique hotel in Bogor, a stone’s throw away from Istana Bogor

  • Ummi & Afat with the couple

  • With friends

  • This is the old-timers & ladies delegation that got stuck in Jakarta – Bogor macet. Joe had a few ‘words’ with Babb later, a nice scene, huhu..

  • The young guns delegation, with me including. Guess which one is me? Hahahaha

  • :D

  • The full crowd making a line to greet the bride and groom. Almost like nasi beratur, but less the time

  • Rushing to the scene!

  • That wasn’t my shot, but just to make a record of it..

  • Waiting for the right moment to step to center stage

  • In the rushing, we still had time to find the world famous Rafflesia flower in this vicinity. Unfortunately, now isn’t the season to see those massive flowers.

  • With our Indonesian counterpart. Seriously I was having big trouble understanding the original Jakarta accent!

  • This time I only realized how tall Babb is. Edna was having her make up on the bed at our back..

Kuala Lumpur – Jakarta -Bogor (pt 1)

THIS assignment was another milestone for me in my photography career. For the first time I got the opportunity to shoot a very special wedding outside Malaysia, and to be more specific, to shoot in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Syed Shaddad is an old friend, dating back from the early secondary school years, around 1995, which makes it standing at 14 years till 2009. It is not the oldest friendship in the world, but nonetheless it is a good experience to have know such a insane-but-in-a-good-way kind of person, especially those hostel years!! Only the hostel-lite knows what hostel life is all about and what we’ve gone through. And he’s getting married to his one and only loved one, Edna Maryana of Jakarta.

OK, so back to the wedding, what I can say about their wedding is that this is not a very traditional Javanese tradition kind of wedding, although there are some ancient tradition being practiced that day. The day starts with an early bath which is called mandi bunga in Bahasa Melayu, whereas the parents and relatives took turns to shower the bride and groom with a pale of mixed flowers and clear water. This act is said to throw away all the bad luck that they had in the past and to prevent it in the future as well. It is some kind of a blessing to the couple as well. The attire that the bride and groom had to wear is specifically for this discipline. Yellow very much dominates the color scheme.

After the morning mandi bunga session, some light refreshment were served to the guests to close the session. Then everybody goes back to their respective place to prepare for the afternoon solemnization session. Much to my surprise (since this is the first time I covered an international wedding), the solemnization tradition doesn’t differ too much from the one we have back in Malaysia. Only the exception was that the bride and groom were covered by a piece of cloth to symbolizes unity i.e. marriage. For me personally, although this is symbol gives a strong impression about their meaning, the overall scene (the cloth covering their heads) does not look quite photogenic to say the least. You can see it by yourself in the pictures below. But anyway, this is how it’s done in Jakarta and we all respect (and love) them very much, hehe..

A visibly emotional father of Edna took the responsibility of the wali himself as opposed to the majority of people today who usually passes it to the kadi as a wali hakim. After quite a lengthy speech, the couple were officially declared married by a witness of about 30 people consists of relatives and friends from both sides. It was an eventful evening where people exchange jokes, experience and conversation between 2 countries. Not to forget to the Qari whom he recited some verses of the Quran which is in my opinion the best I heard so far.

I like when Edna mum’s said that this kind of unity may bring both countries closer together and unite under a common understanding, be it political, cultural or economical. Well I guess that Indonesian women and Malaysian men make great partnership!! I’m sure my friends couldn’t agree more with this!! Hahaha…

So we conclude the first day with this entry, and the reception the next day promised to be an explosive reading with a LOT of events did turns out unexpectedly.Well you have to wait for it I’m afraid. So, for the moment, enjoy the pictures below. Have a nice day maite!

  • Don’t be fooled by the surrounding, this piece of lot can buy you a double storey terrace house in Kajang!

  • Getting prepared, but not to forget to show some humor, typical Babb

  • The spokesperson

  • Buang suwey

  • The rombongan with the gifts getting ready to go

  • Exchange of gift from over the sea

  • Head covering symbolizes unity

  • Asking for permission

  • Done and dusted

  • Typical Indonesian (Java tradition?) feast, eating with no table. I’m serious!

  • Happy couple

Bertandang: Norhidayah & Yussuf at Gombak

COMING BACK from all the fusses of setting up a studio and office, I would like to continue my posting with this 1st entry of 2010 the assignment at Gombak for Norhidayah & Yussuf whom they hired me for their solemnization and reception at Segamat few months ago.

As you see our outdoor session was held at the legendary Kuala Lumpur Railway Station on a rather rainy evening. For your information, this location wasn’t the intended location for our outdoor, indeed it was to be FRIM in Kepong for that matter. But with several technical problems we had, so we decided it is best to have it at the railway station instead.

  • Band ‘otai’. Memang power beb!

Surprisingly, their costumes for the session matched perfectly with the architecture of the surrounding area compared to FRIM which is green and brown all around. Old architecture with a mix of western & eastern elements compliment the couple’s dress & suit. My idea was to shot them standing just besides the railway while the train passes through, but unexpectedly we were barred from entering the area because we didn’t make a written request and the necessary payment. Arggh, I never thought these kind of place needed written request, let alone ‘photography fees’! But anyway, the surrounding areas of the station were good enough it seems.

  • Yeop cendol doing what he does best, serving the masses!

  • The smoothest version of Hotel California I’ve ever heard

So we spent approximately 1 hour 30 minutes for the session until it reached darkness that my flash and it’s f4 could not cope anymore. Although we didn’t got to go to the place we really wanted to go (FRIM), but our plan B seems to be a success nonetheless. We had our time in front of the Heritage Hotel entrance, the underpass tunnel between 2 blocks and in front of the management building, and that was the first time I shot a couple at the railway station. Thanks to Hidayah & Yussuf for hiring me to capture your precious moments from the start to the finish. Now just wait for the album to reach your doorstep, huhu. Regarding the railway station, definitely will come again if the need arises!!

Anyone? Ada bran..??.

  • The Groom’s father takes center stage.

  • Nice try ladies!

  • Nice architecture

  • Making a last ditch proposal for their honeymoon trip! Not too late mate! Hahaha….

Assalamualaikum to all my viewers…

THE PAST 12 months has been a wonderful journey (I consider ups & downs as wonderful) for me on a professional & personal level as well. To all my ex-clients, it has been a great privilege to capture your precious moment, from morning till late, from Kuala Lumpur all the way to Penang, then fly to Jakarta, it has been a magnificent journey so far. And I hope the momentum will continue into 2010 inshaAllah.

The 2nd updated version of the clip

Special Tribute

——————

FINALLY 2009 is about to come to an end. As for most of you guys out there, today is the day where people starts to think about their respective new year resolution or whatever they want to call it. Today is also the day where people reflects about the ups and downs of 2009, and prepares for the upcoming years with full of confidence and hope. In the end, hope is one of the things that makes us rise from the fall, become stronger from illness and happier after sorrow. People hope for so many things, but the real question is do they really do what they had hoped for, like what they had hoped in January 2009?

For me personally & professionally, the beginning of 2010 marks the beginning of a journey into a relatively unknown territory, business. With the launching of my company SignDeco MGT Enterprise, which holds 2 brands; SignDeco Photography & Interior Design and Detik Indah Wedding Images in January 2010 insyaAllah, 2010 will be a tough year but hopefully exciting in the same time.

——————

——————

From the ashes of April 2009 where I finally threw-in-the-towel as a designer in a consultant firm to the emergence of my own studio at the back end of 2009, the year was one of the best years in my life, almost on the same par as 1999, if not surpassed it.

In this post I would like to pay tribute to the PIXELWORKS PHOTOGRAPHY & DESIGN team especially Mr Radzi Zin & Nik Hamidi for giving me the space and opportunity to learn and explore the world of wedding photography to a level where I am today. Also in this period, I am able to develop my skill and knowledge in photography in general without restriction and it has been a pleasure to be part of a group of dedicated, passionate and crazy (in good terms) people throughout our (roughly) 2 years working relationship. My only hope is that we can continue this great and close relationship to a new level in the future, insyaAllah.

——————

——————

My biggest delight goes to Mat Husaini of Husaini Photography for practically introducing me to this discipline in the middle of 2006. From theory as well as practical knowledge, he has been there since the beginning of all this. He also played a major part in influencing me to be a Canonian, hahaha, and since then I never looked back…

To all my ex- client, whether from Pixelworks or friends of friends, a big hands to you guys for believing in me to capture your happiest days. couldn’t asked for more than that. With your support, you guys are actually supporting the advancement of my career in photography, whether you realized it or not.

——————

——————

A big thank you to Dell’s husband, Raja Amirul @ setokin @ k i n g k o n g of Digital Syndicate for helping me in setting up my website from scratch to what it is now, hehe. I still owe you a big meal bro. Talking about websites and IT stuff, since I am no IT freak/geek for that matter, there are quite a few personnel directly involved in my project, they are Izham Saringat @ Am, Hazairi @ Jay and Radzi Zin @ raxeez. These people are sincere in their knowledge sharing and I am grateful to have known such people, although I think treating them to a drink or SHISHA is actually quite nice at worst, hahahaha….

On the business side, if I don’t mention Izham Shaari of Kedai Dobi Mesra, then I must be totally forgetful or plain dumb. His vast knowledge in business and ‘how it’s done’ mentality is what one should learn from. Also to  Uncle Omar’s (some call him Pak Omaq, hehe) sons, Zaini & Zaidi for their knowledge and logistical as well as moral support throughout the whole process, it has been a great few months, and definitely we are looking forward for a great future in front of us, insyaAllah.

——————

——————

And the warmest of them all, to both my parents and siblings, a big thank you for your undivided support & believing in me in what I do and what I want to achieve with this project. It has been a looooong journey till I reached this point, but the interesting/scary reality is, this is just the beginning
